Steps You Can Take If You Are Frustrated with Dry Hair

Written By Alejandro Hormechea 25 Sep 2023

Are you struggling with dry hair?  Has it been something that has bothered you for years, and you can’t seem to get your hair out of the dry cycle?

First, it is important to know that you are not alone.  Just like greasy or oily hair, dry hair is a common problem, but it doesn’t have to be something that you live with forever. If you’re struggling with dry hair, there are a few simple steps you can take to help restore your hair’s moisture and keep it hydrated and healthy.  We know well about dry hair at Fino for Men in Vegas and Summerlin, as many of our regular clients have dry hair, and we work with them on hydration techniques and hair care. Remember, this is a process, and it will take patience and time to get you on the road to feeling happy about hydrated, great looking hair.   But some techniques are proven to work:

1. Use Lukewarm Water to Begin to Avoid Drying or Damaging Your Hair

Hot showers feel great, but they can strip the natural oils from your hair. Many men use ultra-hot water when they shower.

Many men don’t realize the damage hot water can cause by drying out our hair.  For those of us men with naturally dry hair, hot showers can create a condition of even brittleness for their hair. Whenever possible, try to use lukewarm or cool water when washing your hair to keep from drying it out even more.  If you are a fan of the cold shower (no jokes here, please) you can even use cold or cool water when washing your hair.  It will help.

2.  Avoid Over-washing:

When it comes to dry hair, less is more. If you’re struggling with dry hair, you should avoid washing your hair every day as it can strip the scalp of its natural oils. Try to limit your hair washes to no more than twice a week.

3. Use the Right Shampoo and Conditioner for Your Hair (Talk to Our Stylists about Options)

Not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal. If you’re dealing with dry hair, opt for shampoos and conditioners that are specifically formulated for dry hair.  Avoid heavily processed, high chemical content formulas.

Look for products that contain ingredients like:

  • Shea butter
  • Argan oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Avocado Oil

These products will help hydrate and nourish your hair; you will definitely want to avoid chemical-heavy shampoos if you have dry hair.  This is a very important factor in addressing this problem.

4. Brush your Hair before Showering:

Brushing your hair before you shower can help to remove any tangles and knots, which makes it easier for your shampoo and conditioner to do its job. It also helps to distribute the natural oils from your scalp to the ends of your hair for extra hydration.

    5. Deep Condition your Hair and Try a “Leave In” Conditioner

Deep conditioning your hair once a week can help to restore moisture to your hair. Look for deep conditioning treatments that are specifically formulated for dry hair, and apply them to your hair after shampooing and rinsing. Leave the treatment on for the recommended amount of time and then rinse out with lukewarm water.

Applying a leave-in conditioner to your hair after showering can help to keep it hydrated throughout the day. Look for a leave-in conditioner that is specifically formulated for dry hair, and apply it to the ends of your hair after showering.

    6. Avoid heat styling and Minimize the Use of Styling Products:

Heat styling can be tough on dry hair, as it can strip the hair of its natural oils. Try to avoid using heat styling tools when possible, or at least reduce the frequency with which you use them  Styling products such as hairspray, gel, and mousse can also dry out your hair. Try to limit your use of styling products to only when necessary.

      7. Invest in a Humidifier in Dry Winter Months

Humidifiers can help to add moisture to the air and keep your hair hydrated. Consider investing in a humidifier for your home, particularly during the dry winter months.  This can also help with issues related to breathing and allergies.

        8. Get Regular Trims at Fino for Men:

Trimming your hair every six to eight weeks can help to get rid of any split ends that can cause your hair to be dry and brittle. And Fino for Men is the destination hair salon for men in Las Vegas and Summerlin where we recommend you get your hair trimmed!
